Statistical Literacy: Seeing How Statistical Significance Is Contextual
نویسنده
چکیده
In observational studies, a statistically significant relationship can become statistically insignificant after taking into account the influence of a confounding factor. This is simply a result of the fact that in observational studies, all associations are contextual. Associations can change depending on what you take into account. First, a graph type is introduced that displays the influence of both binary predictor variables on a rate outcome. Secondly the non-interaction condition is introduced to simplify the presentation. Three cases are examined: an association is changed, does not disappear and is not reversed, an association is changed, does not disappear and is reversed, and an association is changed and disappears (is spurious). Third, confidence intervals are used to identify whether an observed difference between two percentages is statistically significant. The influence of a third factor is shown to be able to transform a statistically significant relation into one that is statistically insignificant. Although none of this is new, this approach to statistical significance and the influence of context is readily presented and easily understood. This approach is strongly recommended for those teaching introductory statistics.

متن کاملStatistical Literacy and Mathematical Thinking
Statistical Literacy, the study of statistics as evidence in arguments, is proposed as a new course – a bridging course to better prepare students for the traditional statistics course. Statistical Literacy can also be a stand-alone course with its focus on observational studies and confounding factors. The mathematics involved in statistical inference of traditional statistics are reviewed. Ca...
متن کاملThree Graphs to Promote Statistical Literacy
Graphical techniques have been used in introductory statistics to teach three big statistical topics: (1) confounding (which can result in Simpson’s Paradox), (2) statistical significance and (3) the vulnerability of statistical significance to confounding. These graphical techniques have been used to teach students as part of the W. M. Keck Statistical Literacy project. These graphs have trans...
متن کاملHow the Mastery Rubric for Statistical Literacy Can Generate Actionable Evidence about Statistical and Quantitative Learning Outcomes
Statistical literacy is essential to an informed citizenry; and two emerging trends highlight a growing need for training that achieves this literacy. The first trend is towards “big” data: while automated analyses can exploit massive amounts of data, the interpretation—and possibly more importantly, the replication—of results are challenging without adequate statistical literacy. The second tr...
